Analyzing the English teaching-learning system in Brazil two worrying and recurring phenomena stand out and affect most learners. They are:

  1. High dropout rate (90 out of 100 Brazilians who start English, drop out).*
  2. Low proficiency on the part of those who finish their English course in Brazil.

Corroborating with this statement, tests and studies developed by EF Education First presents Brazil as a country whose speakers of English as a foreign language (EFL) have “Low proficiency” and it tends to fall in the ranking to the least desirable level “Very Low Proficiency”. *Source: EF – Education First.

Unfortunately, despite the evidence, it is not the subject of debate, there are no systematic structural actions aimed at minimizing the problems mentioned above. On the contrary, there is a certain taboo and conformity with the situation, which makes the challenge of improving international communication skills through English even greater.

The book / eBook The Code of High Proficiency in English is based on my personal and professional trajectory with regard to teaching and learning English. First, as an apprentice user of the Brazilian English teaching system, then in England, tasting water from a more reliable source. As a professional, I have worked as an English instructor and pedagogical coordinator in English schools in Brazil for almost 20 years. By testing, comparing and observing English learners over the years, I was able to identify points that distinguish successful people from those who succumb to the challenge.

These experiences led me to the following conclusion: Learning English in Brazil, at internationally satisfactory levels, requires much more than a good instructor with a well-sequenced content program. In general, we Brazilians are not in the habit of learning other languages, so achieving high fluency in English in Brazil depends primarily on the development, not only of an efficient mentality, but also equally efficient habits. Based on this, I scanned the national and international English teaching and learning system to identify where exactly our challenges are and made available in this book / eBook a set of concepts, techniques and behaviors that I believe are essential and determining tools to minimize the evident problems in the system and guarantee a more successful trajectory, both for apprentices and for English teaching professionals in Brazil.

Actually, the challenges mentioned are the background of the book, which is filled with great tips, demystifications, personal histories and experiences; I humbly believe it will be impossible for the reader to remain the same after reading it. Undoubtedly, there are excellent teaching institutions and professionals in Brazil, we are a developing country with strong potential in all areas, but I deeply believe that admitting there are challenges in our teaching-learning system is the first step towards implementing new concepts and a better mindset in order to deliver programs that fully comply with the mission of training English speakers in Brazil in greater quantity and with better quality, like others countries that already do so.
