We all have disagreements from time to time, but what kind of language do you normally use? There are many different ways to disagree with another person in English, as this infographic proves. It is highly probable that beginning with weaker phrases, like 1-6, would be the best way to prevent a tiff escalating into a massive row, rather than going straight in with numbers 16-20. Whatever your preferred style of argument, it is well worth learning different ways to disagree in English – from weaker phrases to stronger ones.

Note: none of the phrases below include English swear words, but if you want to take the argument to a level beyond number 20, you could certainly use them!

9. I’m afraid you are probably wrong.

10. Can I tell you where you’re going wrong?

11. Just accept that you are wrong.

12. Absolutely not!

13. You must be joking!

14. Do you seriously believe that?

15. That is patently untrue and you know it!

16. Liar!

17. That is utter codswallop / bilge!

18. I’ve never heard such complete and utter rubbish in my entire life!

19. What planet are you on?!

20. Are you out of your tiny mind?
